NASSAU, The Bahamas – In honour of Kidney Awareness Month, RF Bank & Trust (Bahamas) Limited (RF) has made a generous donation to the Kidney Centre to expand access to lifesaving, personalised care for individuals affected by kidney disease. The gift, which will bolster patient support services in Freeport, forms part of a three-year partnership between the leading investment bank and the Centre, underscoring RF’s commitment to positively impacting the communities it serves.

Observed globally each March, World Kidney Month is held this year under the theme “Kidney Health For All” in recognition of the fact that unequal access to healthcare persists within and across countries. In The Bahamas, where kidney disease is a leading cause of mortality, and where geographic and economic barriers often limit access to treatment, private sector support plays an important role in advancing health equity. The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in its National Health Strategy 2026-2030, echoes this concern, outlining that critical gaps must be closed to “build a health system that delivers for every community.”

Jamila Carroll-Thompson, operations coordinator at the Kidney Centre’s Freeport facility, emphasised the importance of RF’s continued support:

“Reliable donations from partners like RF help us address the personal needs of patients, many of whom face social as well as health challenges. I cannot express how grateful we are for the donation!”

Ethan Knowles, regional communications supervisor at RF, spoke to the vision behind the partnership:

“Health is a core pillar of our community impact campaign, and it’s been a pleasure partnering with the Kidney Centre for a third year in a row. Community comes first at RF, so we’re proud to be easing the burden for those affected by kidney disease.”

The Kidney Centre Freeport operates the largest dialysis unit in the country, serving over 140 patients. Specialising in haemodialysis treatment, the Centre has served The Bahamas for over forty years across its New Providence, Grand Bahama, and Abaco locations.

Noting that kidney disease “affects so many Bahamians,” Ms. Carroll-Thompson also spoke to the challenges many patients face in securing care—particularly those residing on the Family Islands.

“I’m from Long Island, and there are people who have to relocate to Nassau or Freeport for care,” she said.
